Iconic Trains: Mallard

Iconic Trains: Mallard

The Mallard is an iconic steam locomotive that was built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1938. It holds the world speed record for steam locomotives, having reached a top speed of 126 miles per hour on July 3rd, 1938. This feat was achieved on a slight downhill slope just south of Grantham in England, and it still stands as the world record today. After its record-breaking run, the Mallard continued to serve on the East Coast Main Line until it was retired in 1963.

Today, the Mallard is preserved as a national treasure at the National Railway Museum in York, England. The museum is home to many other historic locomotives, but the Mallard is undoubtedly one of its star attractions. Visitors can see the Mallard up close and learn about its history, as well as explore the other exhibits in the museum.

But what about the Mallard's upkeep? Where is it kept when it's not on display for visitors to admire? The answer is that the Mallard is stored in a specially designed locomotive shed at the National Railway Museum. This shed is climate-controlled and is designed to protect the Mallard from the elements and keep it in top condition.

In addition to its home at the National Railway Museum, the Mallard has also made occasional appearances at special events and exhibitions around the country. These appearances are a rare opportunity for railway enthusiasts to see the Mallard in action, and they always draw large crowds.

Overall, the Mallard is a true marvel of engineering and a testament to the skill of the railway workers who built it. Its legacy continues to captivate railway enthusiasts and historians alike, and its place in the history of steam locomotives is secure for generations to come.
